I was going to witter on about how I yesterday I got the last part of my Merciless Gladiator's set, and also by the way, my raid group beat the Lady Vashj and High Astromancer Solarian encounters in World of Borecraft, but all that is out the window now, you've been spared.

Rather, I'm going to just link to Video: Zero Punctuation Dissects Heavenly Sword, a highly entertaining monologue set to amusing images, covering two subjects; first a review of the demo of Heavenly Sword for the PS3, and secondly a commentary on the (previously mentioned) Resident Evil "racism" controversy.

Enjoy!

You keep bringing up racism by theboz (2.00 / 0) #1 Thu Aug 16, 2007 at 09:11:49 AM EST
Is that an admission of guilt on your part? After all, you make video games, and Resident Evil is a video game. If Resident Evil is racist, that makes you racist by extension.

I rarely see games about white collar crime by georgeha (4.00 / 2) #2 Thu Aug 16, 2007 at 09:20:28 AM EST
Have you ever seen a video game about white people who went to prep school and then Ivy League universities and then defrauded investors or embezzled funds? It's usually games about poorer people, or people of color, or Italian-American sorts engaged in violent crime. I'm seeing a lot of racism and classism there.

I could see it as an adventure quest type of game, or even a strategy based with the fraud squad and the adutiors vs Gordon Gecko and the City traders.

It does appear to be traditional. There's also the get get cancer in Changi option.
I could seriously see this a strategy game.

I'm on one of the servers that's been down for the last two days. I think this is the beginning of the end for my WoW career.

WoW Career by codemonkey uk (2.00 / 0) #5 Thu Aug 16, 2007 at 09:43:47 AM EST
It's a game, not a job. Nobody pays you to play it, so it's not a career.

That's just one of those little things that bugs me, when people say that.

PS: All the cook kids have characters on multiple servers (Hihi Teranus/Turalyon) for just those occasions when there is down time. :P

Thus, "career."

I got to 70 and then it was pretty meh because, as a priest, I was expected to go shadow (wtf?).

I'm leveling up a lock and a druid now. It's been more fun, but I'm getting to that level where you need to be hitting the instances for the good gear (40-60) and I can't find groups.

How similar is WoW to Diablo II? by Breaker (2.00 / 0) #6 Thu Aug 16, 2007 at 10:32:48 AM EST
Is there a "hardcore" mode?  How long does it take to get to L70?

answers by codemonkey uk (4.00 / 1) #10 Thu Aug 16, 2007 at 11:19:19 AM EST
I've not played Diablo II, but there certainly is the scope within WoW for whatever you might consider to be "hardcore".

As for how long it takes to level up to the current max level (70), according to PlayOn Accumulated Leveling Times:

The data suggests that it will take a player on average 15 full days of accumulated playing time to reach level 70, and that the 10-day mark is crossed at approximately level 56.

D2 hardcore mode - when you die (either through monster or PK hostile player), you die.  No comeback.  You can allow friendly players the right to loot your corpse and get your kit back, but the character remains dead.

15 days to get to L70 sounds like quite a commitment.

No hardcore mode by jayhawk88 (4.00 / 1) #11 Thu Aug 16, 2007 at 11:21:37 AM EST
You can always revive yourself. And trust me this is a good thing. Even experienced players die before lvl 10, as sometimes there's just no getting around a bad pull.

Penalty by ks1178 (4.00 / 1) #19 Thu Aug 16, 2007 at 11:53:55 AM EST
You have to run back to your corpse, unless someone friendly is near by and can resurect you.

This can take 30 seconds to get back to where you were, or up to 5 or 10 minutes depending on where you die, and where the graveyard is that you need to run back from.

In addition you take a 10% durability hit to your equipped gear, which requires a nominal amount of gold to repair.

Or you can take an additional 25% hit to all of your gear (equipped and non-equipped) to rez directly at the grave yard, and not have to run back to your body.

If you want to play a "hardcore" mode though, there's nothing stopping you from deleting your character everytime you die.

All of this by jayhawk88 (2.00 / 0) #22 Thu Aug 16, 2007 at 02:29:00 PM EST
WoW is definitely made to be "noob friendly" and this is one of the ways. The repair bill is minimal; until you start getting epics even at lvl 60 a couple of deaths' repair bill will rarely run over 2 or 3 gold (as a comparison, a mediocre lvl 60 magic item can usually sell to a vendor for 1 or 2 gold, and at the Auction House for 3 or 4 gold).

Heavenly Sword by ucblockhead (2.00 / 0) #21 Thu Aug 16, 2007 at 12:21:03 PM EST
I found the demo to that game off putting. It made me want to buy the game less. It was pretty much "XXXXXXXXX<-->-<XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX that's it!?" <P> On the other hand, the demo movie for Metal Gear Solid 4 made that into a must buy.

The PS3 makes downloading demos easy, but I find that most companies don't seem to have a clue how to make a good demo. Putting the tutorial section up doesn't cut it. There also seems a fear (as with Heavenly Sword) of putting a real amount of content up, as if they don't like the idea of you actually having fun without paying. This is lame...much better to put in enough (like a half hour of gameplay) to rope you in.

You got the first 10 or so levels for free.

I don't know anyone who played beyond level 3 who didn't go and buy the game...
