Software
By codemonkey uk (Fri Aug 24, 2007 at 04:29:28 AM EST) (all tags)
I'll keep this brief: I've written a small piece of similation software (I'll go into details on that at a later date, I promise), which spits out some potentially very large CSV files, and I need some software to visualise the data on OS X.

Free software.

That I don't have to pay for.

I tried a couple of "evaluation" spreadsheets, but they were either rubbish, restricted, or crashed on my dataset.

I'd quite like to be able to download something at lunch time (3 hours from now) so I can mess about with the data on the train home tonight...

Thanks

I don't plan on installing Open Office by codemonkey uk (4.00 / 1) #2 Fri Aug 24, 2007 at 05:07:00 AM EST
Just to plot a graph.

Unless that really is the best option.

The simplest and easiest if you want it for today. You can always uninstall it.

"The [OpenOffice Aqua Port] will be released in Mid-September 2007"

I'm not really prepared to sully my PowerBook with X11 just to graph some data.

There must be a better way.

Is Aqua native (via Java) and good enough. It's an OO.o fork.

Omnigraffle trial? by Merekat (2.00 / 0) #4 Fri Aug 24, 2007 at 06:08:28 AM EST
Though I admit I only use it to manually model things and have no idea about it's import functions.

Omnigraffle is ace for diagramming by codemonkey uk (2.00 / 0) #5 Fri Aug 24, 2007 at 06:32:01 AM EST
I had play with it a while back when a limited version was bundled with OS X. I never tried (never even knew it had) data visualisation (plotting/graphing) tools.

I don't know if it has either outside of the UML stencils. But I loves it:)

Ow. 2003. Can I remember it? by ObviousTroll (2.00 / 0) #10 Fri Aug 24, 2007 at 12:14:21 PM EST
I remember using some kind of plotting package in 2003 to analyze some data mining algorithms. I think it was gnuplot.

It worked pretty well, IIRC.

Has anybody seen my clue? I know I had it when I came in here.

gnuplot + aquaterm (which is installed by default if you install it via fink)

Also, a lot of people don't realize that OSX comes with an app called Grapher which might do what you need (though I don't know how well it handles ginormous datasets).

Gnuplot is slightly complex, but very capable.

My second favourite is xmgrace/xmgr, an archaic graphing tool of unixy origins. It should be available for OSX. Windows users can get it with cygwin.

Shouldn't that be IAWTIAWTPP?

Grapher by codemonkey uk (2.00 / 0) #14 Sat Aug 25, 2007 at 03:36:04 PM EST
Plots equations, but I don't see how you can graph datasets... (no import CSV that I can find)...

My apologies for the delay but did you try Mesa? by lm (2.00 / 0) #13 Sat Aug 25, 2007 at 09:26:10 AM EST
I don't know about the present OS X version, but in 1994 Mesa/2 on OS/2 was what all the cool kids were using.

I'm uncertain that it's an active project by lm (2.00 / 0) #19 Mon Aug 27, 2007 at 10:54:48 AM EST
But I planning to preview it before I saw what an exceptional deal the academic version of MS Office for OS X was. As my wife is the only one to really use a spreadsheet, I bowed to her desire for MS Office over the alternatives.
